Sensei Howard Mutton
Sensei Howard Mutton, 7th Dan, has trained almost exclusively in Shotokan karate for more than 40 years and is the most senior and highest-ranked WSKF instructor in Australia.
His early training, with local instructor Sensei Denis Purvis, mixed Kyokushinkai karate with a Shotokan influence. In 1980 he joined what was then the Shotokan Karate Association of Australia (now Shotokan Karate International Australia), where he had the privilege of training under the late Sensei Frank Nowak, whom he describes as one of the most inspiring karate-ka he has ever seen. He stayed with SKIA until 1995, training during that time with a number of well-known international instructors, including Sensei Hirokazu Kanazawa.
He first trained with Sensei Hitoshi Kasuya in 1987. Kasuya Sensei's attitude and technical ability led Sensei Howard to join Kasuya Sensei's then-new organisation, the World Shotokan Karate-Do Federation, in 1995. Today he teaches at the WSKF Maylands dojo, just north of the Perth CBD, presides over all WSKF Perth dojos, and teaches the advanced brown and black belts at our Westminster club.
